Pessimistic Fallibilism and Cognitive Vulnerability.Ángeles J. Perona - 2020 - European Journal of Pragmatism and American Philosophy 12 (1).
In this text, the relationship between fallibilism and cognitive vulnerability is examined using Richard Rorty’s thinking as an example. First, some of Rorty’s central ideas are collected and commented on, especially the substitution of objectivity for solidarity, since it affects relevant issues of epistemology and of reflection on rationality. Next, the notions of fallibilism and cognitive vulnerability are examined, which will be connected to an existential dimension of vulnerability. Examples of all those things are also given from Rorty’s thinking and (...)

Comprensión, objetividad y universalidad. Sobre como la epistemología se enraiza con la filosofía práctica.Angeles J. Perona - 1996 - Logos. Anales Del Seminario de Metafísica [Universidad Complutense de Madrid, España] 30 (2):93-106.
order to defend Putnam’s conceptual pluralism. Finally, the paper defends the compatibility between conceptual pluralism and the idea of convergence in a final opinion. Consequently, I conclude that objectivity depends on the particular vocabularies employed. This paper examines the concept of objectivity as a point of view without perspective. This sense of objectivity is present (among others) in Williams’ works (particularly in its notion of absolute conception of reality). The structure of the paper is the following: first, Williams’ physicalist program (...)

This paper aims to show how the first modern reflections on questions about practical rationality may eventually give rise to three different samples of subjectivity: first, that elaborated by Macchiavelli, secondly the one which may be found (...)

Every time that one refers to the political philosophy that could be drawn from the so called " Last Wittgenstein ", the most habitual thing is to associate it with conservative positions, given that the majority of the available literature on the matter does it so. Nevertheless, in the last few years some philosophers, such as Chantal Mouffe and Paolo Virno, have tried to offer a new picture in which Wittgenstein fits better with democratic political ideas, even though this manoeuvre (...)

This essay analyzes some of the connections between hermeneutics, epistemology, and feminism. Feminist theory offers a useful field for reflection on the links between the enlightened and the hermeneutic traditions. The appeal to the Enlightenment introduces the notions of truth and freedom 1 Este artículo ha podido realizarse gracias a la generosa ayuda de la Fundación Caja de Madrid en forma de beca postdoctoral, bajo la dirección de Celia Amorós. Perception and Imagination in Descartes, Boyle and Hooke.J. J. MacIntosh - 1983 - Canadian Journal of Philosophy 13 (3):327 - 352.
Descartes, Boyle and Hooke shared, with many other seventeenth-century figures, the view that mechanical explanations were the only intellectually satisfactory ones. They also all accepted the view that we have incorporeal souls. This generated a problem for them when they wrote about perception. In this area, indeed, Descartes seems to be almost a reluctant Cartesian. When we read his scientific writings, the incorporeal soul is not stressed, and Descartes happily speaks of physical, or of corporeal, ideas in discussing sensation, memory (...)

    Theological Question-Begging.J. J. MacIntosh - 1991 - Dialogue 30 (4):531-.
In the first section of this paper I offer a necessary condition for members of a particular class of arguments to be acceptable asproofs. In the second section, I point out that a plausible extension of this principle reveals that a number of additional arguments cannot function successfully as proofs. Finally, I note that a number of theological arguments, particularly cosmological and ontological arguments, are suspect in the light of this extended principle. Standardly in the ontological argument, criticism falls on (...)

In his concept of an anthropological physiology, F.J.J. Buytendijk has tried to lay down the theoretical and scientific foundations for an anthropologically-oriented medicine. The aim of anthropological physiology is to demonstrate, empirically, what being specifically human is in the most elementary physiological functions. This article contains a sketch of Buytendijk''s life and work, an overview of his philosophical-anthropological presuppositions, an outline of his idea of an anthropological physiology and medicine, and a discussion of some episternological and methodological problems. It is (...)

Spanish public awareness regarding DNA profile databases in forensic genetics: what type of DNA profiles should be included?J. J. Gamero, J. -L. Romero, J. -L. Peralta, M. Carvalho & F. Corte-Real - 2007 - Journal of Medical Ethics 33 (10):598-604.
The importance of non-codifying DNA polymorphism for the administration of justice is now well known. In Spain, however, this type of test has given rise to questions in recent years: Should consent be obtained before biological samples are taken from an individual for DNA analysis? Does society perceive these techniques and methods of analysis as being reliable? There appears to be lack of knowledge concerning the basic norms that regulate databases containing private or personal information and the protection that information (...)

    Seneca as a Source For Earlier Thought (Especially Meteorology).J. J. Hall - 1977 - Classical Quarterly 27 (02):409-.
In his philosophical works Seneca often refers to the views of his predecessors, and sometimes is the sole or the earliest authority for what he says about them, which makes it important for the student of earlier thought to know whether what he says is likely to be true. This I believe can be roughly assessed–and this paper is an attempt to do it–by considering how reliable he is in places where he can be checked: that is, in places where (...)
